Transgenerational Induction of Resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi in Holm Oak

چکیده
The maternal environment of a tree species can influence the development and resistance its offspring. Transgenerational induction is well known in plants but occurrence forest has been less reported. Quercus ilex L. (holm oak) widespread Mediterranean threatened by invasive Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands pathogen. P. on offspring infected Q. mother trees not studied. This study compared performance tolerance to seedlings from non-infected cinnamomi-infected trees. Acorns were collected five forests. After isolations conducted rhizosphere several trees, each forest, three selected as cinnamomi-infected. Forty acorns per weighed sown under greenhouse conditions, when aged ~9 months they challenged with cinnamomi. Plant mortality was higher than (26.2% vs. 21.1%, respectively). Consistently, survival probabilities those particularly reduced growth. Although healthy heavier time death inoculated influenced seed weight. positively related belowground mass, an increased proportion fine secondary roots. We report transgenerational-induced triggered unknown mechanism independent acorn mass. Information about persistence transgenerational effects these plant fitness crucial improve management regeneration this declining species.

Effects of Gypsum Soil Amendments on Avocado Growth, Soil Drainage, and Resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi
Phytophthora root rot of avocado, a soilborne disease caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands, continues to be devastating to the cultivation of avocados despite more than 70 years of research on control methods. Phytophthora root rot has been estimated to be present in two-thirds of the avocado groves in California, causing losses of almost 30% of the total value of the crop (5). P. cinnamomi m...

We present a review on the state-of-the-art of fruit prodution in Western Iberia woodlands («dehesas»), and particularly in Q. ilex (holm oak) «dehesas». This threatened ecosystem is of very high ecological and economical importance. Quercus sp. fruits (acorns) are essential for wildlife, and for pig fattening in «dehesas». In the first part of this review we briefly describe the phenology of t...
متن کاملRelationship between field resistance to Phytophthora ramorum and constitutive phenolic chemistry of coast live oak
Sudden oak death, caused by Phytophthora ramorum, has resulted in high levels of coast live oak (CLO) mortality. However, some CLO survive in areas with high disease pressure and may thus be resistant. We tested the hypothesis that such field-resistant trees contain constitutively higher levels of phenolics than susceptible trees. Phloem was sampled from the trunks of two groups of trees (one p...
متن کاملChemistry of Coast Live Oak Response to Phytophthora ramorum Infection
Since the mid 1990s, Phytophthora ramorum has been responsible for the widespread mortality of tanoaks, as well as several oak species throughout California and Oregon forests. However, not all trees die, even in areas with high disease pressure, suggesting that some trees may be resistant to the pathogen. The apparent resistance to P. ramorum infection of some individuals within coast live oak...
